Circle Of Life

Just got done reading ‘Life’ by Keith Richards.

What an exciting life he has led. An amazing life! Not that I would have wanted to go through some of what he has (including the many attempts to quit heroin before he finally kicked it.)

He certainly has led a no-holds barred, balls-to-the-wall existence; in other words, an honest, authentic life. And, the cat’s had way more than nine of them!

His mom is a prominent figure in the book. Without giving away the ending, let’s just say things come full circle between them.

The book is chock full of stories from his early childhood to the present day. Interspersed are other character’s versions of things. And his storytelling is every bit as good as his guitar playing and songwriting.

Both Keith and my parents died within a few years of each other, fathers first, mothers after.

When my dad died, he started showing up right away in my dreams. For my mom, it took a while for her to come around.

The way things come together–these events of life and death- reminded me of a dream I had about my mom after she passed.

In that first dream, the dialog went something like this:

‘Uh, hey mom…what are you doing here?’ I asked while she hovered over me horizontally looking at me as I was lying on my back in bed.

‘Oh, Jean! You’ll never believe it, it was pretty fantastic!’ as she began to tell me about her ‘transition’ over to the other side.

I don’t recall her exact words, but, apparently, the gist of it was that her journey had been really frightening at first, took a lot of twists and turns but eventually she made it. And, in the end, things turned out alright.

No wonder it took her so long to show up!

I was glad to hear from her.

My mom and I didn’t always see eye-to-eye but we always eventually came together. And, like Keith and his mom, we remained close our entire lives through all the ups and downs, ins and outs, throughout the whole circle.

Life IS a circle, after all, or, as I sometimes like to think, a figure eight—no beginning or end. What you do in between ‘the meat’ as Keith likes to say is what’s important.

Hope my life will become as good a read.

What about you?

Are you making the most of it this time around?
